Rising 62 stories in downtown Miami, with dramatic, voluminous curves in its architecture, the tower, overlooking Museum Park and Biscayne Bay, is projected to be groundbreaking for the city’s high-design residential market.

Hadid, who, at 65, died in Miami of a heart attack, conceived the project’s comprehensive design. It was already under construction before her death in March of last year.

“We have the same team that was involved in the design overseeing the construction to ensure the original vision for the project is carried out to preserve the integrity of Zaha’s legacy,” says Louis Birdman, co-developer for the project, along with Gregg Covin.

An artist’s eccentric sculpture, as much as it is an innovative residential tower by Zaha Hadid Architects, One Thousand Museum, with an anticipated 2018 completion, is poised in the city’s cultural center, near the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and American Airlines Arena.

“One Thousand Museum’s structure is expressed as its primary design feature,” Birdman says, adding, “…Its organic forms seem to grow out of the earth and reach skyward to the top of the tower,” perhaps imitating an exotic organism erupting from the ground. Behind the curvy exterior, a crystalline glass façade softens the structural silhouette.

The shape is molded by over 4,8000 pieces of prefabricated glass fiber reinforced concrete panels, which were shipped overseas from Dubai over a period of 18 months. Birdman notes, “The design of these panels is based precisely on Zaha Hadid Architects’ 3D model… This system has never been used in this manner for a structure of this height, making it the first of its kind in the world.”

An aesthetic extension of the tower, the Sun & Swim Terrace is sculpted with areas of natural light and shadow that shift around organically shaped pools throughout the day.

Opening onto the Sun & Swim Terrace, the Wellness and Spa occupies two levels. It is constantly evolving, exploring innovative styles, materials, and techniques for the manufacturing of classic décor that reflects modern designs. “For change to exist, you have to be willing to discover the uncertain, and Cassina has always been both brave and innovative in its approach,” said managing director Gianluca Armento in a recent interview with Haute Residence.

Known for renewing and reintroducing its historic pieces, Cassina collaborated with the Le Corbusier Foundation and the heir of French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand to re-launch the Casiers Standard, a revolutionary product designed in 1925, in relation to “the organization of space that had never been explored in such a way before,” Armento explained. It’s been updated in a range of heights, modules, and finishes to produce 18 options, suited for any interior space.

Limited editions of the LC1 Pampas small armchair and LC4 Pampas chaise-longue were released with Pampas hides from South America. These pieces are intended to honor the designs and travels of Swiss-French architect and designer Le Corbusier and Perriand in Latin America.

Until recently, the 932 armchair, designed by Italian architect and designer Mario Bellini in the ’60s, was left out of the Cassina collection for many years. It was re-launched as the MB1 Quartet armchair, a more contemporary interpretation of the classic armchair, with four independently made cushions joined by a large belt.

Armento elaborates on what to expect in the pages of the monograph, as well as how the luxury brand is reviving its name and modernizing its timeless furniture in an interview below with Haute Residence.

Haute Residence: With its 90th anniversary, the furniture brand has released Cassina: This Will Be The Place, a monograph that explores evolving, contemporary styles of living through five uniquely designed interiors furnished with pieces from Cassina. Talk about the book, what it aims to deliver, and how it celebrates dynamic designs of the last century and beyond.

Gianluca Armento: Cassina has always invested in experimentation and the exploration of ideas connected to interiors and design––it is part of the company’s DNA. The monograph is an opportunity to look towards the future involving influencers from different fields––not just interior design––who each explore their idea of how contemporary social behavior could have an impact on the future of interiors. For example, the young Chinese architect Zhao Yang talks about his approach, which sees a shift from the Western mania of building up urban centers, to a return to nature as a response to the uprooting of traditions in a society, where he feels identity has been lost. In the second part of the book, Cassina has identified five different themes that have been interpreted in five interior concepts. “Back to the Roots” features the furniture from our collections.

HR: How have interior designs by Cassina evolved over the past 90 years, as well as continued to reflect the brand’s original concept of producing modern classics?

GA: For change to exist, you have to be willing to discover the uncertain, and Cassina has always been both brave and innovative in its approach. Since the 1950s, the company has been exploring new production techniques, materials, and styles to create innovative products that cater for the living requirements specific to that time.

The concept of re-editing modern classics was born with the Le Corbusier, Jeanneret, and Perriand pieces in 1964, evolving over the years into the Cassina I Maestri Collection, with iconic classics by the great architects of the Modern Movement. The pieces, unknown at the time, were serially produced for the first time and distributed on an international level by Cassina, making them the well-known icons that they have become today. These projects have such value and content that they are subject to constant improvement to best meet today’s requirements. We are always looking for ways to modernize and develop classic projects, working in close collaboration with the official foundations and heirs of the architects to adapt to a constantly changing world.

LC4 Pampas Chaise-Longue

HR: Talk about how historic brand pieces––including the LC1 Pampas small armchair, LC4 Pampas chaise-longue, and the Casiers Standard––have been renewed with updated, more modern details, as well as preserved in their classic designs.

GA: The designs of these iconic pieces have withstood the test of time and are still great masterpieces of modernism today. To highlight the works and travels of Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand in Latin America, we have introduced limited editions of the LC4 chaise-lounge and the LC1 small armchair with Pampas hides from South America. Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand both had a strong connection with the local South American artistic and cultural circles, so this was a way to pay homage. The Casiers Standard project was revolutionary at the time of its design in 1925, an idea regarding the organization of space that had never been explored in such a way before. Working together with the Le Corbusier Foundation and the heir of Charlotte Perriand, the piece has been re-launched in a range of heights, modules, and finishes to create a total of 18 options suited to all environments of the home, including the kitchen and office

MB1 Quartet Chair By Mario Bellini

HR: The 932 armchair by Mario Bellini from the ’60s has been out of the Cassina collection for years. Why was this particular piece chosen to be revived with new elements and modifications?

GA: Mario Bellini has been working with Cassina for over 50 years. This year, to mark the occasion, we will gather his projects together in the MB Collection. The 932 model, re-launched today as the MB1 Quartet armchair, particularly transformed the idea of the traditional armchair by making its four independently produced cushions, joined together by a large belt, the piece’s actual structure. MB1 Quartet has a particularly contemporary feel to it―it really could have been designed today!

HR: Before her death in March 2016, architect Zaha Hadid collaborated with Cassina on the ZH One armchair, a piece that will continually strengthen her legacy. Describe how the armchair blends the architect’s striking, bold designs with Cassina’s classic contemporary style.

GA: We are honored to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Zaha Hadid, such an important and ingenious creator. Her futuristic style is unmistakable in the lines of the ZH One, a unique reworking of the cube armchair. The design is a perfect blend of her aesthetic and our continued commitment to exploring new shapes, finishes, and colors that can dialogue with the modern home.

HR: Are there any upcoming designer collaborations in the works? What does the future have in store for the Cassina brand?

GA: We have a number of new projects coming up for Cassina. This year, for the 2017 collection, we have further strengthened our collaboration with Konstantin Grcic with the Soft Props sofa, and we have a brand-new collaboration with Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec that we are very enthusiastic about.

Built in 1933 by architect Sumner Spaulding, the French chateau-style neoclassical residence in Bel-Air first belonged to hotelier Arnold Kirkeby, who bought it in the 1940s. While he lived there, he rented it out for the set of The Beverly Hillbillies. In 1986, Kirkeby sold the estate to late billionaire, Jerry Perenchio, who died in May, for $13.5 million, according to property records.

Perenchio bought several neighboring parcels, nearly doubling the total land to 10.3 acres. Most recently, he paid $9.2 million in 2009 for a 1.3-acre lot on Nimes Road. At one point, he hired interior designer Henri Samuel to redesign the home, which he named“Chartwell.”

A private driveway leads to the 25,000-square-foot main house, with an impressive wine cellar, a ballroom, and a paneled dining room, among other such exquisite rooms.

There is also a guesthouse, designed by architect Wallace Neff, tennis courts, and a 75-foot pool and pool house, and covered parking, on the property’s manicured grounds.

The listings agents include Drew Fenton, Gary Gold, and Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland; Alexandra Allen, Jade Mills, Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker; and Drew Gitlin and Susan Gitlin of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.

The brokers announced the listing Monday, but it has not been entered into the multiple listing service.

In January, another exorbitantly priced estate, nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” was listed with a $250 price tag. The 55,000-square-foot, brand-new construction, also located in Bel Air, comes with a $30 million car collection, a full-time seven-person staff, and much more.

“The buyer acquired the property at an incredible price and the international interest that resulted in the sale prompted us to test the market to determine the estate’s true value,” explains listing agent Adam Rosenfeld, co-founder of Mercer Vine.

The 12,200-square-foot, exquisite Tuscan-style home is sited on over 10 acres, consisting of three parcels. One is vacant; another includes a guesthouse, a sunken tennis court, and a swimming pool; and the third has the residence.

Just a 15-minute helicopter ride from Manhattan or a 4.5-minute helicopter ride from Westchester County Airport, according to the listing, the private 11-acre island property is owned by Joe Massaro, a sheet metal mogul.

Massaro bought the parcel for $750,000 in 1995, according to property records, from its previous owner Ahmed Chahroudi, who had commissioned the construction of a three-bedroom cottage from Wright in 1950. Wright drew up plans for a main residence, as well, but Chahroudi ran out of money to follow through with it. When he bought the land, Massaro hired Illinois-based architect Thomas Heinz, who knows Wright’s architecture well, to build it.

Both triangular in shape, the cottage and main residence are constructed with sculptural boulders and exposed rock bulging through concrete walls. With four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, the roughly 6,000-square-foot main residence, “Massaro House,” is roofed by a helipad. A geometric skylight is centered in the living area.

Additionally, there is a guesthouse, teahouse, and dock. The property offers plenty of space for a pool, a tennis court, and even more amenities.

Massaro briefly listed the island for $20 million in 2012 to test the waters, says listing agent Chadwick Ciocci, CEO and founder of Chilton & Chadwick.

“While you can find something bigger or more expensive, there is nothing quite this cool,” he says. “The main house is amazing and the entire concept… is entirely unique.”

Norton purchased the residence through a limited liability company. The actor and activist was most recently nominated in 2015 for his roles in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Primal Fear and American History X.

A double-height great room, adjoined to the dining room, on the first level offers views of Central Park through its 15-foot-high windows, the listing states.

On the second level, a bedroom, with two bathrooms and a dressing room, lead out to a balcony that overlooks the great room.

Its three lines––Pecan, Chado, and Land––each featuring unique crafting techniques, materials, colors, and designs, are inspired by the culture and values of the nomadic people of the Middle East.

Pecan

Crafted using a rare technique devised from years of extensive research, the Pecan rug is made of a full-bodied strong, wool woven around a jute core. This produces a three-dimensional knit that, though very soft, imitates the look of the Earth strewn with walnut shells, allowing the rug to be used on either side. It is available in shades of Pale Pink, Mole Grey, and Graphite.

Chado

Handmade in India, delicate bamboo silk and thick linen threads are intertwined with an ancient knotting method. Velvety silk offsets the opacity of the linen, resulting in a constantly wavering pattern. It is available in Pearl Grey, Earl Grey, Antique Yellow, Copper, and Soft Blue.

Land

A particular wool-weaving technique, resulting in textural effects that allude to ploughed fields from a bird’s-eye view, is used to make the Land line of rugs in this collection. Hand woven using an ancient weaving method, know as sumak, these solid colored canvases are saturated earth tones of deep shades of rust red, coal grey, dark blue, and nude.

Purchased in 1957 by Roy Ash, creator of the Environmental Protection Agency, the ranch residence has hosted many prominent guests, including former President Nixon.

It is located in Hidden Valley, an exclusive celebrity enclave containing about 40 properties, each with a minimum of 20 acres. David Murdock, Tom Selleck, and Jamie Foxx are current residents of the community, and Ellen Degeneres, Sophia Loren, Sylvester Stallone, and Robert Wagner are among celebrities who are rumored to have once lived there.

Hughes was flying the XF-11, a reconnaissance aircraft commissioned by the U.S Air Force, on its maiden voyage, when he experienced engine problems mid-flight.

Unable to reach the Los Angeles Country Club for an emergency landing, the plane crashed into a group of houses (including the one currently for sale at 805 N. Linden) on North Linden Drive and Whittier Drive.

The right wing of the plane sliced through the upstairs bedroom, barely missing the occupants, who were the brother and sister-in-law of actress Rosemary DeCamp, according to the Los Angeles Times archives. Hughes was critically injured but survived.

The 6,500-square-foot renovated residence is situated on more than a third of an acre.

"Since the incredible Wallace Neff designed this stunning home in 1926, owners have been fortunate to own an exceptional property at the intersection of entertainment and distinctive design," says Aaron Kirman, who holds the listing with Louis Evans of John Aaroe Group.

The exterior of the home preserves its Spanish Revival style with detailed wrought ironwork and a clay-tiled roof.

Newly built in Southampton, “Summerhouse” surpassed the second largest house for sale in the area, “La Dune,” which has a significantly higher asking price of $145 million, by 1,000 square feet.

Listing agent Harold Grant said the residence at 6 Olde Town was designed for the “modernist buyer,” despite its classic New England shingle-style exterior.

The interior, however, boasts state-of-the-art amenities, including a chef’s kitchen, with industrial appliances and five custom stone fireplaces.

With nine bedrooms, as well as nine full and four half bathrooms, the home was designed with light, reflective colors and high ceilings intended to enhance the space, according to Grant.

Meant for entertaining, the estate has a lounge with a full bar, a gym, an indoor basketball court, and a movie theater.

There are also staff quarters, a pool house, a custom Gunite swimming pool with a spa, and a rooftop putting green.

Situated on four acres, Summerhouse is part of a seven-house property built by Kean Development group based within the luxury community of Olde Towne. Two of the seven homes for sale have sold.

Located in Chilmark, the estate consists of an 18th century wooden farmhouse, as well as a guesthouse, studio, and barn, with beach access.

The main residence, designed with yellow pine floors, as well as the other structures, will require major renovations, says listing agent Meg Bodnar of Tea Lane Associates.

Cagney, well known for acting in 1930s and ‘40s gangster films, bought the property, which was larger at that time, in 1936. He and his family spent many summers there, according to his autobiography Cagney by Cagney.

According to Bodnar, they sold the estate in the 1980s, and it was later used as a commune.

Boston restaurateurs Patrick Lyons and Sean Gildea bought the farm for $4.1 million in 2012 under the name You Dirty Rat LLC as a tribute to Cagney and his legacy in film.

The business partners and friends planned to build vacation homes on the land; however, Lyons decided to keep his family’s current residence on the South Shore, while Gildea ultimately purchased another property.
