Here in Santa Fe, the coming of Spring and warmer weather signals the beginning of our fabulous outdoor Summer art markets, the first of which is the International Folk Art Market, scheduled this year July 13, 14 and 15 at Milner Plaza on outrageously beautiful Museum Hill.

Back in July 2004, 61 master folk artists ventured to this high-desert city at the foot of the Rocky Mountains to share in a then-untested proposition that creativity, prosperity, and community well-being could be realized through the art of the handmade.

This July, the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market and that proposition marks 15 years of art and impact as 162 master artists from 53 countries gather in Santa Fe to create what has become the largest, most diverse, folk art market in the world.

Collectively, these artists’ eye-dazzling forms, textures and designs in textiles, jewelry, beadwork, basketry, sculpture, ceramics, rugs, metalwork, clothing, home accessories and more, blur borders in colorful displays of culture dignity, beauty, and hope.

Our folk art market was voted Best Art Festival by USA TODAY’S 10 Best Reader’s Choice Awards. As its popularity has grown, the Market’s belief in the power of these artists as cultural ambassadors who provide common ground in an increasingly polarized world has been validated. The Market’s success has sparked an international folk art movement here in Santa Fe that resonates throughout the global creative economy as consumers embrace and support the art of the handmade and the artisan sector.
